AGIS™ is ORTHECTA’s flagship innovation project: a next-generation respiratory protection platform for orthopaedic surgery and healthcare emergency preparedness. Developed through clinical work at Akershus University Hospital, with support from the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) and Camfil, AGIS™ combines the familiar workflow of surgical helmet systems with filtered respiratory protection in a proprietary platform.

Routine Surgery

AGIS™ is designed for arthroplasty and septic orthopaedic surgery, where surgical smoke, aerosols, and airborne particles expose healthcare professionals during long-term procedures. Unlike conventional surgical helmet systems, which circulate unfiltered air, AGIS™ delivers filtered airflow to the wearer and is designed to minimise wearer-generated particle emission in the operating theatre. This potential benefit will be evaluated in future studies.

Hip and knee arthroplasty alone accounts for approximately four million procedures annually across Europe and the United States.

Emergency Preparedness

The same platform can be redeployed to intensive care units, emergency departments, and isolation wards during infectious disease outbreaks. A disposable hood helps limit contamination of reusable components, allowing rapid turnaround through simple surface disinfection rather than the extensive reprocessing required by many conventional powered respirators.

Proven Clinical Foundation

AGIS™ builds on EURODAPTER®, a first-generation proof-of-concept system developed during the COVID-19 pandemic. EURODAPTER® obtained temporary emergency regulatory clearance in Norway, enabling limited clinical use and supply to Akershus University Hospital.

The clearance has since expired, but the project demonstrated that the concept could be tested, documented and introduced under urgent clinical need. The work was published in peer-reviewed research and received the Idea Award from Inven2, the technology transfer office of the South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority. Continued development has been supported by Innovation Norway and the Research Council of Norway.
